Seven of ten US adults say the country is on the wrong track. In over six years of daily polling, a majority of US adults believed we were headed in the right direction only four times, “peaking” at 52% on March 14, 2021. Even Democrats, with their guy in charge, have been dipping below 50% in the past year.
Not surprisingly, one in five Americans say the government itself tops the list of problems facing the government.
I wonder why?
Corruption has permeated every layer and branch of government. After the Supreme Court legalized bribery in a 2010 decision, campaign spending surged to $16.4B in 2022 from $5.3B in 2008. The revolving door from industry lobbyist to industry regulator and back again has ensured that every regulatory agency is staffed by industry loyalists without an eye for consumer protections. Lawmakers literally outsource the drafting of legislation to their campaign donors, who then share with the most obedient grifters privileged information to better time the purchase and sale of securities–the Congressional monoparty is the best damn trading desk on the planet.
Our billionaire, or perhaps very soon, trillionaire, oligarchs finance the media outlets that sanitize and package “the truth” for mass consumption. Establishment journalists fail in their duty to hold power to account when a scoop, though truthful, threatens to ostracize them from elite circles and prematurely terminate their career. Instead, the stories that elevate the concerns of average citizens are ignored in favor of ephemeral distractions proven to maximize clicks and shares in our algorithmically-driven echo chambers. Political discourse on social media is moderated by the FBI, CIA, and DHS, while the US government wages an authoritarian assault against First Amendment principles and heroes who expose war crimes.
The oligarchy has spent decades investing in elections and media to ensure American voters live in fractured, contentious realities. Their strategy is to divide and conquer, and it is working.
